Exploring Beyond Anthropocentrism: IPOLS Hosts Academic Discussion on Law and Governance in the Anthropocene

The International Program for Law and Sharia (IPOLS) proudly hosted an enriching academic discussion titled, “Are we too Anthropocentric? (the more-than-human) Law and Governance in the Anthropocene,” on Thursday, March 14, 2024. The event took place at the Amphitheater, 4th Floor Pascasarjana Building, UMY.

 

The discussion, which was led by esteemed Ph.D. candidate Hanna Nur Afifah Yogar from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, captivated the audience with profound insights into the evolving dynamics of law and governance in the contemporary era. Hanna, an alumnus of IPOLS, brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discourse, drawing from her expertise in International Development Studies.

The focal point of the discussion centered on the concept of anthropocentrism and its implications for legal frameworks and governance structures in the Anthropocene epoch. Participants engaged in thought-provoking deliberations, exploring alternative perspectives that transcend human-centric approaches and embrace the interconnectedness of all beings within the ecosystem.
“In today’s rapidly changing world, it is imperative to reevaluate our perspectives on law and governance, considering the profound impact of human activities on the planet and its inhabitants.” Hanna said.

 

The event attracted a diverse audience comprising students, scholars, and practitioners, reflecting IPOLS’ commitment to fostering interdisciplinary discourse and scholarly exchange. Attendees expressed appreciation for the opportunity to delve into pressing issues confronting contemporary society and explore innovative approaches to address them.
